We investigated a total of nine CsMPs using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and inferred the atmosphere in the reactors during the accident. From elemental mapping using energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, Fe and Zn showing radial inhomogeneities were found in the CsMPs, in addition to the Cs that had been previously reported. Four of the CsMPs included submicron crystals, which were identified as chromite, franklinite, acanthite, molybdenite, and hessite. The chromium-containing spinels, chromite and franklinite, indicated the presence of ferrous iron (Fe), suggesting that the inside of the reactors was reductive to some extent. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy also confirmed that the CsMPs did not contain boron, and therefore the atmosphere in which they were formed might be boron-free.

Vortex arrangements are almost the same just below Tc, indicating the existence of strong pinning centers in the sample. The origin of the strong pinning centers comes from the morphological inhomogeneity on the surface.

A Time-of-Flight neutron beam line for the experiment has been constructed at the KURRI electron LINAC. The assembling of the 4 Ge spectrometer is in progress. We are also developing a new data acquisition system based on a digital processing technique.

The highlights of the presentations are as follows. Long pulse operation with high beta and high bootstrap fraction much longer than the current diffusion time has been achieved. The discharge scenario optimization and its extrapolation towards ITER have progressed remarkably. Significant progress has been made in understanding of global confinement and transport physics.

The research on Innovative Water Reactor for Flexible fuel cycle (FLWR) has been performed in JAERI for the development of future innovative reactors. The workshop on the FLWRs has been held every year since 1998 aiming at information exchange between JAERI and other organizations. The 8th workshop was held on Feb. 10, 2005 under the joint auspices of JAERI and North Kanto and Kanto-Koetsu branches of Atomic Energy Society of Japan with 75 participants. The workshop began with 3 presentations on FLWRs entitled "Framework and Status of Research and Development on FLWRs", "Long-Term Fuel Cycle Scenarios for Advanced Utilization of Plutonium from LWRs", and "Experiments on Characteristics on Hydrodynamics in Tight-Lattice Core". Then 3 lectures followed: "Development of Evaluation Method for Accuracy in Predicting Neutronics Characteristics of Tight-Lattice Core" by Osaka University, "Development of Cost-Reduced Low-Moderation Spectrum Boiling Water Reactor" by Toshiba Corporation and "Design and Analysis on Super-Critical Water Cooled Power Reactors" by Tokyo University.

We have performed synthesis studies of various III-V nitrides crystals, key materials for optoelectronic and high-power/frequency devices, using a cubic-anvil-type large volume high-pressure apparatus combined with in situ X-ray diffraction. Polly-crystallines of AlGaN alloys covering a composition range of 0 x 1 were synthesized by a solid-phase reaction under high pressure. In situ X-ray diffraction profiles were measured to observe the alloying process, which started at around 800C under 6.0 GPa. Single crystal of AlGaN was also successfully obtained by slow cooling of its melt from 2400C at 6.5 GPa. For InN, its phase diagram was determined under high P-T conditions up to 20GPa and 2000C based on the in situ observations, which demonstrates that 19GPa and 1900C are needed for its congruent melting.

JAERI-Review 2004-003, 152 Pages, 2004/03
A working party was organized for two years (2001-2002) on common reactor physics code systems under the Research Committee on Reactor Physics of JAERI. This final report is compilation of activity of the working party on common reactor physics code systems during two years. Objectives of the working party is to clarify basic concept of common reactor physics code systems to improve convenience of reactor physics code systems for reactor physics researchers in Japan on their various field of research and development activities. We have held four meetings during 2 years, investigated status of reactor physics code systems and innovative software technologies, and discussed basic concept of common reactor physics code systems.

Our calculation suggests that InN is a narrow-gap semiconductor and strongly supports the recently reported smaller bandgaps.
